Lovers at Dusk | Night Time Beach Flash Photography

Ummmmmm YES WE DID THAT! You guys, I can not even begin to explain to you how PUMPED I was for this session! These two lovers are celebrating their 2 year anniversary and what better way to do that than have a little night swim? Keep reading find out how I put together this night time beach flash photography session!

When we first started the planning stages of this shoot, I asked how big of an adventure they were up for- little did they know their answer of “anything!” would put them in the ocean by 8pm, lol!

We had way too much fun. I gave them a bit of some inspiration for what I was wanting to capture for them so they could prepare themselves accordingly (swimsuits, towels, change of clothes, etc). I took them to a little beach just past Kahuku, where the sun sets beautifully! We started shooting around 7:20, just as the sun was going down to capture that flash photography vibe but also still include the beautiful colors of the sunset.

I was shooting with my Canon 5D Mark IV, Sigma 35mm lens and my Canon Speedlite 430EX III-RT. I shot in RAW (like how I always do, but during shoots like this when the only light you’re working with is from your flash, shooting RAW is even more crucial!) with an ISO of around 600, shutter speed of about 200 ( I didn’t want to shoot their movement blurry, but if that’s the effect you’re going for then bump that shutter speed down!) and an aperture of 1.3 (the lowest possible setting with my camera + lens mix). When working with flash, ALWAYS bring extra batteries! Flashes go through batteries like nothing so keep that in mind next time you’re working with flash.

My editing process was simple! I used my own presets to give it a warmer feel, and played with the exposure a lot. Bumped that up along with the shadows and blacks, but also played around with the highlights + whites to keep the bright feel. The rest of the adjustments are minor, but overall, this is how I shot/edited this session. SUPER fun and SUPER easy! If you guys try something like this out, tag me so I can see!

Happy Creating Friends!
